Last year was another tough one financially, yet, with God’s grace, The Sharing Center was able to take an enormous step in faith to change the plight of homeless people in Central Florida. We opened a new Oasis service center in our Longwood plaza – the only one of its kind in Seminole County – where homeless can get a shower, a haircut and clothes washed to regain their dignity and self-respect. Adults and children can use computers for job searches and school work, and be connected to other resources to regain their independence and ability to work and live safely.
What a difference our Oasis makes in their lives! As one woman said after getting a shower and haircut: “It (Oasis) goes a long way to help you feel normal when you’re in a situation that’s not normal.”
Please celebrate with us some more highlights from last year in The Sharing Center’s mission of helping with emergency needs. Most notably, in that difficult year of 2011 -- our 25th anniversary year -- we were able to:
+ Help 731 families keep their homes;
+ Assist 5,310 patients with costs of prescriptions and to obtain lab tests, exams, surgeries, and other medical aid;
+ Give brand new shoes to 1,592 needy children.
+ Provide $5 worth of help for every $1 donated.
Perhaps you saw the "60 Minutes" CBS-TV episodes last year that highlighted the problems of “the new homeless” in Seminole County – people who had not known hardship before but now are forced to bed down for the night in their car, sleep on a friend’s couch or even create a camp in the woods with their children. The Sharing Center had fought these problems for a long time before the TV cameras came to town. During the two years prior, we rescued 1,545 families who were either homeless or soon would be without someone to give a hand up. The Sharing Center extended the hand that brought them back to safety.
Helping stabilize local children and families with basic food, clothing, shelter and other needs during family emergencies has been our charge for 26 years. You can help today by partnering with The Sharing Center, helping us to fulfill our mission of
Sharing the reality of God's love with those in need by providing material assistance and promoting Christian generosity.
